In the 2nd Conference on International Earth Science Olympiad (IESO) held on April 12-13,2007 in Kwangju, Korea, the Philippines was chosen to host the second IESO in 2008; and Taiwan, in 2009. As such communications have already been sent to different stakeholders.

IESO is a competition for secondary school students aged 18 and below who are gifted in the Earth Sciences. The Olympiad involves competition and cooperation aspects. During competition, students will have to take both the written and practical tests. In the cooperation aspect, the participants are grouped such that no students from the same country are in the same group. Each group will conduct field investigation in designated sites and they will have to present the results of their investigation using powerpoint and/or other media.

The first IESO (see http://2007ieso.or.kr) took place in South Korea on October 7-15, 2007 at Hotel Interburgo, Daegu and Rivertel, Yeongwol County. Eleven countries registered for the event. The written and practical tests took place in Daegu while the “cooperation” work took place in four geologic sites in Yeongwol, County.

UNESCO and the International Union of Geological Science (IUGS) have declared 2008 as the International Year of the Planet Earth (IYPE). More than 65 countries have developed their own national programs to celebrate “The Year” (Please see www.yearofplanetearth.org)

In October 22-24, 2007, the Bicol Region hosted the First National Conference on Climate Change. Since one of the venues for the 2nd IESO is the Bicol region and there is so much enthusiasm and possible funding for projects and programs related to Climate Change, the theme for the 2nd IESO is proposed to be “ COOPTITION IN ADRESSING CLIMATE CHANGE”. The term “cooptition” is a coined word which is a hybrid of “cooperation” and “competition”. Since the syllabus of the IESO deviates from the traditional content of the highly compartmentalized Earth Sciences and underpins the Sytems approach, the theme complements well with the aims of the Olympiad.

The coverage of the written test is as follows:

Geography and  Geology

Meteorology and Oceanography

Astronomy and Space Sciences
